The Tally
Each depth opens with a bill from the Tallyman. Pay it at a merchant, or its boss collects in blood.
The due
Stepping onto floor 1, 11 or 21 posts that depth's Tally. The depth's name in the top bar gives way to a chip: "Tally: owe 62". Tap it for the Tally card.
| Depth | Posted on | Due | Collected by |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Gilt Cellars | Floor 1 | 62 | The Tallyman, floor 10 |
| The Drowned Reliquary | Floor 11 | 383 | Mother Brine, floor 20 |
| The Hoard Heart | Floor 21 | 2374 | Avarax, floor 30 |
The due is 3 times the standard gold of the depth's boss floor: about an eighth of what the depth pays you. While it is posted, every kill pays 10% more gold, so a run that pays its dues ends up no poorer.
Paying
Only a merchant takes payment. "Pay" hands over as much of the due as your gold covers; you can pay in parts across several merchants. Settle it in full and you get a receipt in gems on the spot:
| Settled on the depth's floor | 1 to 3 | 4 to 6 | 7 to 9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gems | 3 | 2 | 1 |
The chip then reads "Tally paid". Gold a Pilfer Imp steals from you goes to the Tallyman's account, so theft counts toward the due, and can even settle it: "TALLY SETTLED".
Not paying
Paying is optional. Arrive at the depth's boss still owing and he is stronger by the share unpaid: +40% health and attack with nothing paid, +20% with half paid.
- The Tallyman also brings a Pilfer Imp for each half of the due still owed: one if you owe half or more, two if you paid nothing.
- Mother Brine and Avarax bring no one, but the same +40%.
- The boss's title card says which it is: "Owed 62: +40% strength, +2 imps" or "The Tally is paid".
The boss notice tests you against the boss as he would be with your debt collected, so it shows what owing costs before you decide.
Is it worth paying?
Usually, and early. 62 gold on floor 1 to 3 buys 3 gems and an easier boss; the same gold on floor 8 buys 1 gem. The game's own tip after a death to an unpaid boss is "Pay the Tally." Skipping it is a real choice when the gold buys a piece that finishes a set: a +40% boss is beatable by a build that is far enough ahead.
Exceptions
- A guided first run has no Tally in the first depth.
- The endless hoard has none.
- The Tallyman's Abacus, carried out, takes 10% off every due for good.
- Pip's Pickpocket pays only on every second strike while a Tally is owed.
