Greed
Break the curse and the game offers to make it harder. Ten levels, each one more rule, for every hero.
How it opens
Greed is kept per hero. Win a run with a hero at that hero's highest open level and the next one opens: a first win opens Greed 1, a win at Greed 1 opens Greed 2, up to 10. A win below your highest open level opens nothing. Winning means breaking the curse, so Greed belongs to the full game.
Once any hero has a level open, hero select shows a "Greed" row with "-" and "+". A hero starts on their highest open level until you turn it down. The roster tags each hero "G3" for their highest, and under Descend it reads "GREED 3".
The ten rules
Each level adds its rule to all the ones below it. Greed 4 plays with rules 1 to 4.
| Level | Rule |
|---|---|
| 1 | Kills pay 30% less gold. |
| 2 | Enemies have 10% more health and deal 10% more damage. |
| 3 | Twins of what you wear turn up a quarter less often. |
| 4 | Bosses hit 20% harder and hold at half a turn longer. |
| 5 | Loot favors the sets you wear half as much. |
| 6 | Bosses have 25% more health. |
| 7 | Enemies have another 15% more health and damage. |
| 8 | Twins of what you wear turn up half as often. |
| 9 | Loot favors the sets you wear a third as much. |
| 10 | Every boss opens with a summons, and has 20% more health. |
What they press on
- Gold (1): less to spend all run. Gold-hungry builds feel it first.
- Brutes (2 and 7): everything has more health and hits harder: 10%, then another 15% on top.
- Twins (3 and 8): a twin of a piece you are wearing turns up less often, so merging your worn gear up takes longer.
- Bosses (4, 6 and 10): they hit a fifth harder, their opening holds for three turns instead of two, they gain a quarter more health, then another fifth, and at the top each opens with a helper already at his side: a Pilfer Imp, a Drowned Ghoul or a Hoard Drakeling.
- Loot lean (5 and 9): loot favours the sets you wear half as much, then a third as much, so finishing a set is less of a given.
Daily Descents are always played at Greed 0 and open no level. The Season Descent is always played at Greed 10, and harder still. The end screen notes the level a run was played at, and the All time board breaks ties by the highest Greed won at.
